‘Revolving door of business and politics must grind to a halt’ – PRCA welcomes PACAC report
The Public Relations and Communications Associations’ (PRCA) Public Affairs Board has welcomed a report from the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) recommending tougher laws governing MPs appointments in the private sector.
The PACAC report recommends all senior officials be required to sign a legally binding agreement compelling them to adhere to rules outlined by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) for two years after they leave office.
The recommendation falls within the PRCA’s 2021 Six Point Public Confidence Plan for Reform, which outlines a blueprint for restoring trust in politics.
PRCA PAB Chair Liam Herbert FPRCA commented:
“We are pleased the Committee agrees with the industry’s recommendation of strengthening rules governing private appointments. We cannot restore faith in parliamentary democracy until the revolving door between politics and business grinds to a halt.
“The report makes clear that ACOBA is unfit for purpose. Now it’s time for the government to step up and enact these changes.”
The PRCA PAB provided oral evidence to the PACAC Committee last month as part of long-term effort to elevate ethical standards across Parliament.
